Gyinning Bidi

Nathan Corunna  – 9th of August, 2023:

“This Mural represents the Karla Nara Gyinning Bidi (Ellenbrook Train Station / Track) connecting the Morley to Ellenbrook railway line.

The Waugal (Rainbow Serpent) is a Aboriginal Dreamtime Ancestral Serpent who carved rivers and underground waterways and valleys creating the Derbarl Yerrigan. The Gyinning (Ellen Brook) stream is one of the many waterways created by the Waugal. Resting in Bennett Brook which is the Waugal’s sacred place and is culturally significant to Whadjuk people.

Native animals and plants, such as the Western Swamp Tortoise and Balgas (Grass trees) which continue to flourish in the Gyinning.

Traditional burning has been used with Karla (fire), use of fire stick burning within the Noongar seasons to encourage the regrowth of flora. Karla is used for warmth, storytelling, cooking, and as ceremonial”.

Darren Hutchens – March, 2024:

“Our design came together really beautifully with a focus on the dual naming of Ellenbrook/Gyinning by employing stylised letterforms. The intent is that the traditional name is partially obscured yet omnipresent in the artwork location.

The colour palette and patterns were derived from the local bushland and reference the Karla Nara/fire stick farming theme. Nathan chose to depict the natural elements of water, fire, and the sun as well as the habitat of the Western Swamp Tortoise and the brilliant design of the Waugal/Rainbow Serpent.

The sacred ancestral serpent, depicted in the form of the railway line, weaves its way through the landscape, linking the new Ellenbrook Station to Morley as part of the greater Metronet project”.
