Six Seasons

Six Seasons

Design for the Six Seasons mural involved seeking cultural permission and advice from Whadjuk Balladong Noongar Elder, Aunty Freda Ogilvie on appropriate imagery and colours to represent each of the seasons. Focussing on traditional food sources and places of food gathering and hunting at the appropriate times of year, the design depicts BIRAK – Dec/Jan warm, sea breezes. BUNURU – Feb/Mar hot, dry easterlies.  DJERAN – Apr/May cool nights, dewy mornings. MAKURU – Jun/Jul first rains. DJILBA – Aug/Sept cold, clear. KAMBARANG – Oct/Nov warm change, less rain. Traditional owner families would move from one place to the other depending on the time of year, responding to seasonal changes and cues from nature. Colour and types of flora and fauna were indicators of what to hunt/gather and when to move. This helped keep food resources plentiful and in balance with a families needs. I’d like to thank Aunty Freda for sharing her culture with me on this project, and being so generous with her time and knowledge.
