Partnership between Main Roads and Georgiou Group incorporating the painting of murals on newly constructed retaining walls and the principal shared underpass, located between Leach Highway and Mt Henry Bridge near the Canning River. Darren managed the consultation, design and installation of the murals assisted by mural artist Luke Smoker. Glen Michaels from IPMP group and his team of 3 painters were contracted to assist with the installation. Painting was completed over 5 weeks between February and March, 2022. The artwork is a visual journey through local native bushland and the river environment. The habitat of many important local historical food sources of fish, prawn and crab feature in the work. The artwork sites are linked by an evolving colour scheme derived from the Main Roads coastal and river colour palettes. The artwork responds to the riverside and freeway location and is enormous in scale, covering approximately 1000 square metres of wall space. Visibility from multiple vantage points was a key consideration in the development of the composition. Large shapes, areas of pattern, carefully considered colours and details ensure the work engages viewers from a distance and close proximity. An official launch event was attended by the Member for Transport Rita Saffioti, local government members, Main Roads and Georgiou staff, as well as representatives from Cycling WA and the local media. A challenging and rewarding project that has been extremely well received by everyone involved.
